Why Locals Love Twenty-One Espresso
Located in the charming enclave of Double Bay, Twenty-One Espresso is a treasured gem for lovers of Eastern European and Hungarian cuisine. This family-run restaurant has stood the test of time, delighting patrons for over three decades with its warm, old-school atmosphere and a menu that lovingly showcases authentic continental dishes.
Stepping into Twenty-One Espresso feels like being welcomed into a cozy European home. The ambiance, while unpretentious and a touch nostalgic, perfectly complements the hearty, comforting food. If you crave that perfect schnitzel experience, their famous chicken schnitzel is a must-try — crispy, golden, and generously portioned, it’s been winning hearts for years. Another standout is the veal boconye, richly flavored and tender, offering a genuine taste of Hungarian culinary heritage. Complimenting these are exceptional dishes like the creamy paprika chicken and creamed spinach, which strike a perfect balance between robust seasoning and comforting textures.
Food aficionados will also appreciate the thoughtful touches on the menu, such as deep-fried mushrooms paired with a velvety blue cheese dipping sauce that seduces the palate with every bite. And for those who appreciate a well-curated wine list, Twenty-One Espresso serves selections that pair beautifully with their robust flavors and generous servings.
What truly makes Twenty-One Espresso stand out is its unwavering commitment to quality and tradition. As one longtime patron, "Chocolate Johnny," notes, the consistency over 35 years is remarkable — a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to both food and community. Families feel right at home here, passing the love for these classic dishes down through generations, while the inviting service adds a welcoming layer to each visit. While some may notice the slightly dated interior, this only enhances the nostalgic charm, making it an ideal spot for those seeking genuine, honest-to-goodness comfort food in Sydney.
With reasonable prices, generous portions, and heartfelt service, Twenty-One Espresso isn’t just a meal — it’s a warm invitation to experience a slice of Hungarian culinary tradition in the heart of Double Bay. I’ve been going to 21 for over 35 years. And have had always a great experience there. The food is still the same. Nothing beats their chicken schnitzel. Now I have my children going and they love it as well. It was so nice to catch up with some friends and have a good old classic meal. The portions were amazing. The service was fantastic, yes it’s a little bit dated but value for money long lasting memories. Nothing beats that. Looking forward to now taking my grandchildren. I’m so happy that the restaurant still the same and the owners are the ones who originally started. Totally recommend to take some friends if you want to eat good old classic food. You should try the traditional Hungarian dishes. Thanks again for the great service and looking forward to seeing you again.

Old school comfort food - love it. Not many of these kinds of places left in Sydney. Good service, nice wine list. Crumbed veal was moist and tender. Deep fried mushrooms with blue cheese dipping sauce - yum. Only thing missing was potato salad. We will be back, even just for the nostalgia

21 Bistro, Double Bay – A Timeless Classic I’ve been coming to 21 Bistro since I was a baby—literally. I have memories of curling up and falling asleep on the banquette seats while my family enjoyed dinner around me. And of course, no meal was complete without a lollipop at the end—one of the highlights of being a kid here! Decades later, nothing has changed, and that’s exactly how it should be. The menu is still full of the same classics—rich, comforting soups, perfectly golden schnitzels, and all the dishes that have made this place an institution. It’s still family-run after all these years, and you can feel that warmth the moment you walk in. Having owned our own restaurant in NYC, we know a special place when we see one. 21 Bistro has that rare, old-school charm that’s nearly impossible to find these days. Now that we’re back in the area, this will be a regular spot for us again. Huge shoutout to Cathy, an absolute legend who keeps the magic alive. If you haven’t been, go immediately. If you have, well—you already know. (BTW… just one small thing - we would absolutely love candles on the tables and the lights to be a little dimmer. Or even just candles on the outside tables at night. That would be amazing!)
